The Colosseum (also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre) is the largest amphitheatre in the world, and is believed to be one of the greatest works of Roman architecture. It was built during 70-80 AD under the rule of emperor Vespasian and completed under his successor Titus. The Colosseum could hold up to 50,000 to 80,000 people and was used for hunting spectacles and gladiatorial combats, executions, dramas and plays. Gladiatorial combats were abolished in 5th century and The Colosseum was then used for housing, vegetable gardens, shelter for animals, shops, etc.
