Retail experiences in Amsterdam

Over the weekend, myself, Annalise and a few friends headed to Amsterdam for a cultural trip away. Whilst we were there, we experienced an array of contrasting architecture, from historical to modern. The image below particularly illustrates the historical architecture in the square of central Amsterdam.

Although we didn't manage to take street-style photographs, one of my friends managed to snap us walking along the street. Despite the coldness; it was still sunny, so we saw quite a few consumers wearing coats, and layers of winter separates, combined with sunglasses.

The canal was possibly the most picturesque aspect of Amsterdam, and was bordered by beautiful architectural buildings. This particular area displayed below had a very serene and quiet atmosphere, compared to the buzzing atmosphere of central Amsterdam.

At sunset, I was able to snap a photograph outlining the silhouettes of the buildings, as you can see the building structure in central Amsterdam is quite chaotic and claustrophobic, this is unlike the wide and open landscapes in the outskirts, such as Oud Zuid.

In central Amsterdam, we observed an array of high-street retail chains, unlike the independent boutiques in the outskirts. For instance, as can be seen below, there was an interactive feature in the store window of H&M, in the form of a video showcasing their new sportswear range. This interactive element demonstrates to consumers how great they can look when wearing a H&M tennis skirt for example.

Going further into the outskirts, we observed more high-end or luxury retail stores such as Hugo Boss. As can be observed below, there was a high contrast between the store windows and merchandising of the high-street stores and the high-end stores.

Bordering the flower market was walls of street art, in particular graffiti and posters, this highly contrasts to the clean-cut image created by the high-end store windows for example.
